There are pros and cons of being five feet tall. If you’re fast enough, you can sneak through the crowd at the bar without being noticed, leaving a trail of six foot blokes twisting their heads around, glancing at eye level and wondering who bumped into them. But you might not be visible over the pumps when you get there.
Going to the bar is fraught with challenges, which a couple of students from the University of Munich wanted to eliminate, so they designed this intelligent beer mat to deal with the issues.
It looks like an innocuous but slightly thick coaster, but inside is a gravity sensor and a weight sensor. The gravity sensor makes sure it’s the right way up, while the weight sensor, yup, you guessed it, weighs the glass. You can set the weight at which you want to alert the barman, so whether you’re having a Heineken or a Martini, it knows when it’s empty, and it automatically orders you a refill.
