AA - D Battery Converter

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I have used C batteries and aluminum foil as a substitute for D batteries in a flashlight before. They don't last as long, (so they really are NOT cheaper) but they do work. But I do wonder: Will you really remember to keep those plastic boxes around any more than you remember to buy D batteries?

the battery converter will work because the AAA, AA, C, D, batteries are all the same voltage, about 1.5 volts when new and 1.1 volts when dead, rechargeable batteries are a little lower, usually 1.2 volts charged and 1 volt when discharged, but rechargeables will work in most things very well.

the big difference is how long it will last,
a larger battery will last much longer than a smaller battery.

the only way I would use the converter is if I have lots of rechargeable AA batteries and no D batteries at all, and do not care if the "run time" is very low.

I've been using similar items for years and in fact have made my own occasionally (some old film pots were great) In fact many commercial C or D type batteries are just 'padded' AAs and last the same amount of time. On the whole 2 AAs will last slightly longer than 1 C or D but a pack of 4 AAs invariably cost the same as a pack of only 2 C or Ds. Another great advantage is if the battery leaks it may only affect the converter. I was also lucky enough to find some D size converters which take 1, 2 or 3 AA batteries at a time and lasted a very long time. I now always use NiMH rechargeables because much energy is wasted manufacturing and transporting non rechargables.
