As if adults losing all their time to Second Life wasn't bad enough, the Beeb have just announced that they intend to launch a Second Life-esque game for kiddiwinks, bringing premature death by obesity and early-onset diabetes ever closer. I mean, why would you want to go and play football/kiss chase/doctors and nurses outside in the rain when it's always sunny in computer land?
Apparently the virtual world won't use cash, so there'll be no eBaying Kinden-dollars, and chat rooms are a no-no to keep paedophiles at bay. Instead, kids will design avatars and, ummm, that seems to be about it, really.
According to BBC Children Controller (how's that for a job title!) Richard Deverell: "It will give children a chance to move around a safe, secure world where they can not only interact with familiar characters but have an opportunity to make that world a more fascinating place with their own imaginations.”
Because using your imagination in parts of the real world safe-guarded by parental supervision is old hat.
