CES 2007: Bill Gates's keynotes speech 3

After an age, 20 minutes after it was 'sposed to start (ok, we were watching humorous anecdotes of Gates's previous speeches, and parodies of Napoleon Dynamite, Celebrity Deathmatch, and Austin Powers to show that y'know, he's down with the kids. Meaning he wants to convert the early 20s to middle-aged black-square emo glasses graphic designers away from Apple; they just can't resist a good Napoleon Dynamite parody.

The first thing we notice once the applause dies down, and the 'Soft fanboys infront of us sit down, is that he's wearing a periwinkle shirt with perhaps a too-high strain of polyester. Ouch. It looks like satin from where I'm sitting.

He starts off by saying how pleased he is to be back at CES, brainwashing us with the latest Vista user statistics, making a rare joke by saying he doubts he'll be invited back after CES 08 for talking too much about rare diseases and his philanthropic work.

A chap called Justin Hutchinson takes over from Gates, to show us some of the flashier details of Vista. We're currently looking at how Vista can restore a document to its previous shape, even days after saving it. He jokes it's even better than going back in time, to which even laughs and applauds. Apparently if you have a hyperlink in a Word document, you can click the link which takes you to Live Search, a form of Google Maps, in which you can then plug a 360 controller into your computer, and zoom through the air, driving down the streets etc. Admittedly, it looks pretty bloody amazing.

The interface of the real time alerts in the Windows Live menu looks suspiciously like the PS3 menu, which is of course a direct rip-off of the PSP. Either way, I'm dead impressed.

Photogallery organises all your photos and videos into one place, where you can view and edit each form of memory.

Ultimate is the flagship of Vista, which can download extra features such as Groupshop. He then shows us how to merge two photos together to form one perfect photo, in this example allowing each member of the scene to have their eyes open, something which each individual photo could not provide. I can't help but think this is cheating, creating false memories.

Apparently you can also drag and drop your own personal videos onto the desktop, creating a moving wallpaper, perpetually playing whichever scene you choose.
