CES 2007: Vault 360 bypasses proprietary software

vault360.jpgIf you're one of the many people who dislikes the use of proprietary software (think iTunes) then Bamboo Technology's Vault 360 could be your answer. It's fundamental aim is to replace all the software that came with your MP3 player, digital camera, computers and their ilk so that you aren't tied to that software.

Bamboo president Todd Porter says, "We want to take all your photos, music and videos from any device to any other device in a very simple fashion, so you don't have to use any of the software that ships with them. You simply plug in the device, and once the content is copied into Vault, you can export those files to any device, and we'll automatically convert them for you."

And DRM copy protected files or iTunes? Porter has the answer, ""If your computer has DRM rights, we'll recognise it so you can transfer your stuff. Also, we totally circumvent iTunes, so you don't need it at all. You can use Vault 360 to transfer videos, photos or music to your iPod, which is a feature people really like."

Sounds good so far and it isn't costly either at $49.99 for the Platinum version with a basic version in at $29.99. It's available in the US now though Brits can by via the website too. However, a European version is due to be launched in February.

It would be nice if the products themselves didn't come with the proprietary crap ..ah idealism.

Anyway, we're working on a music brokerage system that is DRM-free, and it rewards users for sharing songs (think pay-2-peer).
