What could be more useless than a can crusher? Well lots of the things in the strange world of gadgets but this week, the aluminium can crusher has made it into my top pick of utter pointlessness. This one is a 'simple but effective wall mounted device', you pull the grip and it squishes the offending empty can. Of course you could do as the people of old have done it and save yourself £12.95 too - insert can under foot and stomp.

They aren't nearly as useless as you'd think. My beau and I live in a house with fancy hardwood floors and, unless you want to go running around outside to crush your can, you can't just step on it. I've been looking for one of these for a bit, actually, since we have a habit of filling up our recycling bin fairly quickly.
I actually have one of these and it makes it so much easier for me to crush them. Makes it faster too.
The aim is to save space while storing cans for recycling - you don't recycle air. Though personally I'm a stomper.
But notice how the crushed can in the picture has got a bit wider? Bizarrely, this stops them fitting the "can-sided" holes in some recycling bins, which is very amusing to onlookers.
Alas, you are sorely mistaken. As the father of three young girls and husband of a wife of small stature these devices are a huge time saver. Neither my wife nor my daughters are capable of accurately and completely "stomping" a can flat. So guess who gets the job of stomping 12+ cans which have accumulated around the kitchen sink after rinsing? Not to mentions all the cans which had to be re-stomped after my girls were incapable of completing the task. God bless the guy who invented these.
Then of course there are the competition can crushers. Quite a different concept. Fun is the object. And the can is scored on compression, rim alignment, and stratification. That makes it just a little more functional than some of the other sports and games because the output "trophy-can" is either a keeper or it is crushed down for the recycler.
