Second Life is an on-line community that allows users to interact with one another using avatars, and in which people can live their lives with all the luxuries that'd like, but that real life does not afford them. Second Life is also a real-life commerce centre, where users trade actual money for their digital creations.
Duran Duran (the musical group, not the Barbarella villain) will soon be joining Second Life, having "commissioned their own custom-designed
avatars who will live out a genuine 'second life' on a fantasy, luxury
island, with 'in-world' concerts and media appearances taking place
alongside the band's media, public and live engagements in the real
world."
This, it seems to me, is a genius marketing
move - and could herald the future of a whole new way of bringing music
to the masses. Sending your digital self to a concert may not be
exactly like the real thing, but it could be close, and you wouldn't
have your toes stomped on, or smell like someone else's stale cigarette
smoke after.
I realize Duran Duran aren't exactly the bad boys of rock, but I do
rather hope their avatars will throw digital televisions out of their
virtual hotel room windows. (thanks, Alex!)
