I know I've only just posted about the Dot Ladybug gardening kits for kids but in the interests of equal opportunitiess, I've found similar items in the UK for those of us who live this side of the pond.
I've had a thing about Asda's homewares for a while now - they are well made, fashionable and a darned sight cheaper than most of their competition. All in all for a supermarket brand they are excellent value for money. Just take a look at the polka dot gardening kit. The basic set, bucket and tools, is available in pink or blue and retails at a pocket money priced £3.50. Plenty more separates can complete the set, think mini dotty gloves for £1, watering can for £4 or even plain pink kits for £3. And it's not just tools that they sell...
Unless you want your prize dahlias dug up as mini-me totters around the garden trying out their new tools, you might want to get them started on a mini garden. The flower garden kit contains everything a child needs to start off a mini flower garden and would be suited equally to apartment living as a window box as it would be to a house. £4.50
Or perhaps your child would like to try growing their own tomatoes £2 or a sunflower £2? As far as I can make it this kit contains pot, soil and seeds to get you started on giant plant growing.
I'm sure I don't need to mention the virtues of education disguised as fun, fresh air and a summer project that really bears fruit, well, flowers at least.
