Uber Review posted this story up on the 1st May not 1st April, otherwise I'd definitely have had it down as an April Fools. The Aphrodite platform shoe is a shoe designed especially for the working prostitute. The idea is that they'll help to protect women on the streets by providing an alarm
system that will give off a shrill alarm and a GPS unit that will make it easy to track missing prostitutes - or you can press the emergency button to provide your location and send an alarm signal to the emergency services (if you happen to be the sex worker in trouble, that is). The prototype also has a screen and speakers on board, so you can stick up adverts for customers and maybe play a few of your favourite heel tones that you've downloaded from the website. Seriously, this surely must be some sort of a joke to provoke debate - and in fact there's an upcoming panel discussion advertised on the site called "Sovereign Whores and Seditious Technology".
But, it also sounds like the Aphrodite Project is taking the idea seriously, saying "Platforms uses the latest technology to bring sex
workers on par with other public workers, whose lives are valued highly
because they work in dangerous professions that serve the needs of the
community".
