Every person travelling abroad should know a few simple things: the whereabouts of their passport at all times, the location of their embassy, and how to say "please," "thank you," "where is the bathroom" and "I'd like to order a [drink of your choice] please" in the native language. Luckily for me, I'm a lass of simple tastes, and the word for "beer" isn't too far off from the English in most cultures I've encountered. If you have a more sophisticated drink palette, or maybe would just like a travelling vocabulary that makes you sound more worldly and less like a wandering drunk in constant search of a working loo, you might want to look into Talking Panda's iLingo translation software for the iPod.
iLingo comes in two versions, both of which support a variety of languages: the Euro Pack 2.0 (French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portugese and Russian) and the AsiaPack 2.0 (Cantonese, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Korean.) Both versions provide an excess of 400 handy phrases, all pronouced by native speakers, designed to help you dine, request directions, and (of course) order drinks and locate the nearest bathroom convincingly.
Both the Euro Pack and the AsiaPack are available on the Talking Panda website, and at Apple Stores.- [Star C. Foster]
