Skype Over 3's 3G Network
Three are offering Skype Starter Kits with all new Web & Office account sign-ups with the 3 DataCard.
These cards are dead useful if you're out and about with your laptop without any access to an internet connection, wireless or not. Our own Katie even vowed to post a few articles to Shiny with her own 3G card (not that she got around to it, terribly busy and important, you see). Having the flexibility to use Skype to call other important people abroad of course is brilliant, that *must* be cheaper than using your mobile.
Along with the DataCard, you get a monthly allowance, from 100MB to 512MB, costing from £20 to £45 respectively. How much cheaper then, is it to use Skype over 3G which will use up your data allowance, than it is to buy a similarly-priced voice tariff and let your conversations use up minutes instead?
I'm genuinely interested, if anyone knows or can work it out, please let us know! [Sara Wallen]

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Skype Over 3's 3G Network:
Comments
Based on the following:
* Estimated maximum voice bitrate of 16kbps (Kilo Bits Per Second) in two directions, making a total of 32kpbs in total data transfer.
* 100MB plan at £20, which equates to 20p per MB.
The cost per minute of a Skype voice call will be:
20p * 60 * 0.032/9 = 4.26p per minute
This is estimated, and will be cheaper if you choose a higher data plan (such as the 512MB plan). It may be cheaper yet again if Skype uses a lower bitrate on the 3 network.
Cheers,
Brad.
