More Girls are Geeking

Chix0r I'd like to suggest a new verb, "to geek". This generally involves being engrossed at the PC; maybe posting to forums, chatting over instant messengers, online shopping, researching a new toy, gaming, trying to keep up with new trends, laughing at celebs who don't, editing blemishes out of your photos, looking for new knitting patterns... You know. The usual.

And you know what, not only are we slowly catching up with the men, we're just about to overtake them. Yes, we female geeks are no longer in the minority.

The European Interactive Advertising Association's survey has found that we spend an average 9 hours online a week (is that all?), compared to to the menfolk's average of 11 hours. Also, in the last 3 years, our internet use has grown by 63%, while the men's usage has only grown by 54%, so we're well into the over-taking lane on this one.

Also, time spent reading magazines has gone down 4.5% (does that mean we've stopped buying the £3.50 monstrosities?), probably as lovely sites like this are infinitely better... er... even if we do say so ourselves.

I must admit I spend a lot more than 9 hours online a week - but gawd knows what I'm actually doing, I mean, I don't even game! What do you lot spend most of your time doing? Feel free to comment and let us know - as it looks like our readership is set to grow, we should be able offer more content that is much more relevant to you!  [Sara Wallen]

Great article Sara...I just calculated the hours I spend every week on the internet - it's a scary 55 hours. I need a life obviously.

It would be easier for me to work out the hours I spend NOT on the internet (pretty much those hours when I'm asleep or washing)

I confess that as an IT person, I've described my paid work as "geeking" for some time.
