I love that story about NASA spending billions of dollars inventing a pen that could write upside-down, underwater and in space while the Russians just went with a pencil (even if it isn't really true).
Anyway, space-pen technology has since migrated and now sits in one end of one of those small Swiss-army knives. I used to love those knives as a kid - I still have one of the things knocking about in my handbag, causing trouble when going through customs and into clubs. Shame the blades wear down so quickly and the scissors are so fiddly! And in this design it even looks like the scissors will collapse straight back into the housing on first cut - but I assume the boffins at Victorinox made it so that doesn't happen. [Sara Wallen]
