Despite looking like something Midas just curled out, this golden poo is actually a lighter. And a lucky lighter at that. Odd Japan has an explanation that runs thus:
"These droppings are meant to bring good luck to the owner, based on a play on Japanese words (and characters). There is a kanji for "un" that means "luck" but "un" in hiragana is the short form for "unko" which means "poop". So, "Kin-Un raitaa" (Kin=gold, Un=luck/turd, raitaa=lighter) is a turd-shaped lighter that brings golden luck.
Which helps to illuminate the matter, without really explaining just why the Japanese would decide to pick this particular pun and run with it. There's also a golden poo-shaped air freshner, which sounds like something of a contradiction in terms to me, but what do I know.
