iPod Bed

_pause4_2

I've seen lots of products use iPod compatibility as a selling point, but the iBed Pause Bed from Design Mobel might just take the cake.  According to the product page - the "most exciting feature" of the optional shelves is how "seamlessly" they incorporate the iPod and Bose Speaker System into the design.

If you want to sell me a bed, talk to me about comfort or even the overall aesthetics. But using an iPod stand as a bed-selling feature?  That's just plain silly. Now, if the shelf incorporated a charging dock, that might be something.  What ever happened to the idea of form and function? I stand (or, perhaps, lie down) corrected - the iPod station on the shelf is, in fact, a universal charging dock.  Those of us who sleep on non-musically enabled beds clearly aren't sufficiently rested enough to post first thing in the morning. - [Star C. Philips Epilators

Satinelle_1I have more body hair than is generally considered decent, hence my interest in anything that might aid my daily fuzz cull (though god in all his mercy has spared me the misery of a full beard and tache). Waxing (and all things related) is generally the most effective way to tear our the hair, but if you're tired of having to let your leg hair grow long enough for plaiting corn rows, an epilator could be the thing for you. Daily shaving leaves me with a five o' clock shadow, while creams are useless and result in a horrendous stench that lasts for days. Epilators, meanwhile, merrily harvest your leg hair, plucking away efficiently until you can again see the colour of your skin. But then of course there's the pain. It's basically a much slower version of waxing, with each hair being torn from its follicle in turn, which is why the brains at Philips have been turning their attention to designing more painless epilators.

Jabra JX10 Bluetooth headset arrives

Jx10_1
While I've yet to get into the whole Bluetooth headset thing (partly because I don't drive, partly because they make you look like a crazy), the Jabra JX10 is a cut above the crowd when it comes to design thanks to the influence of Jacob Jenson - the company behind a lot of Bang & Olufsen's stuff. It's very small and lightweight - something you can't really guage from the photos - and it's also pretty stylish (if a headset can ever be called stylish). The only downside is the price, which reaches B&O-like proportions at £99.

Telewest Shiny Award Noms: Fashion Mobiles

SagemChoosing what makes a good fashion phone is a tricky one - everyone has different ideas about what makes a desirable phone. The Nokia L'amour fashion handsets would certainly qualify but they're not out till the second quarter of next year, while the RAZR may still be wowing the crowds, but since it won last year's fashion award, it didn't make the list this time around. Find out who's won what on 2nd December.

Scented Dress

TrackBacks (2)

Dresspic6Admittedly, I'd be personally hesitant to don any article of clothing described as having "its own nervous system,"  but that doesn't mean I'm not slightly fascinated by the Smart Second Skin Dress.  If I'm interpreting the purple prose correctly ("magic wellness molecules"?  "rainbow symphony of aromas"?), cables throughout the dress will puff out the perfume of the wearer's choice in order to create a personal "smell bubble" around them - thereby improving their mood, enhancing their overall sensory experience, and making them smell good (and if you've ever ridden public transit, you know this can be a benefit not just to the wearer, but to us all).

There's something intriguing about the synergy of fashion, mood and technology.  But  I'm a bit frightened they'll start outfitting perfume counter workers at the local department stores with these, and my holiday shopping experience will be "enhanced" by my being sensorily attacked by salespeople wearing clouds of cologne competing scent bubbles. - [Star C. LG's gold plated home theatre system

Lgtheater_b2Ye gods! Now there's some minging bling if ever I saw it. LG's 24-carat gold plated home cinema set up would look great in some sort of pimp abode, but other than that I can't really see it blending in to a normal living room. One drop of sunshine in through the windows and your whole family will be blinded for life by the glare. Pricing's not available, but if you have to ask, etc etc.

Happy 1st Birthday Shiny Media

Shinymedia
Here's our latest press release. Happy Birthday to us! We're off to get drunk. (We wish).

• 1.5 million page impressions
• 1 million unique visitors
• Second Telewest Shiny Awards

Shiny Media celebrates its first anniversary today with the news that November is on target to be our biggest and best month so far. Across our network of 14 blogs we look set to record 1.5 million page impressions in 30 days, over 1 million of them unique visitors.

But that's not all. In the latest Google page rankings - a measure by which higher quality sites receive a higher score - our sites have all performed exceptionally well. Shiny Shiny - the world's leading girls' gadget blog - is the only UK consumer electronics website to have a ranking of 7/10 for its home page. That's higher than T3, Crave (CNet), Pocket-Lint and Stuff.

This Thursday also sees the return of the Telewest Shiny Awards in which readers and top industry journalists decide on the best and worst gadgets on the market. Thanks for all your support in making this last 12 months so exciting. And look out for new launches from the rapidly expanding Shiny Media network over the next few months.

MotopeblThe Icon award is supposed to go to the gadget that everyone has been lusting over with unfettered desire for the whole year. That's not to say it's necessarily the best one around (that's what the Tech Digest Gadget of the Year award is about), but it does have to be a product that's heading for iconic status, with great design that sets it apart from the rest of the bunch. Here are our nominations. Find out who has won on 2nd December.

What's New From Shiny?

Linandleostairs

Picking out the nominations for the best gadget accessory this year was a tough one. There's been a lot of stuff, for starters, and a lot of that stuff has been innovative and useful. We tried to pick a broad selection of products across a wide range of areas, but there's bound to be some we had to miss off. One thing is sure: if I had but seen those USB slippers before today, they'd have surely had it in the bag. Find out who won on 2nd December.

iPod speakers in Pink

Pink_coloured_grillesThose i-deck people have reasoned that since people are always personalising their iPods, they'd probably quite like to do the same with their iPod accessories. Which explains the existence of this pink i-deck. Actually, it's just a normal i-deck decked out in some changeable speaker grilles, and you can pick from blue and black versions as well. The speaker grilles are available for £9.99 a pair from Monitor Audio's i-deck site.

Shiny Award Noms: Shiny Award For Bling

Baby_phat_case_1Those of you who've been idly pondering why we missed the blinging delights of the Million Dollar Mobile off our nominations list may be partially satisfied with this answer. We decided to pick things that normal people have a hope in hell of purchasing one day. Granted, there are few people likely to be coughing up the £20K for the Baby Phat PSP case (pictured) or £50K for the Vertu, but there's still a slim chance of them one day appearing in the houses of the rich and foolish in the US and UK.

Cath Kidston Revival Radio

Cath_kidson_revivalBarely have I recovered from the excitement of seeing the swirly beauty of the Matthew Williamson Intempo in the flesh than this Cath Kidston number pitches up and sets me off squealing again. Not only is it adorned with Cath's trademark vintage floral print, it's also one of Roberts's excellent Revival radios, which means you get fantastic build quality combined with the joys of DAB digital. This is one of the latest models, so it's got PausePlus for those times when you want to pause or rewind a song or show. It'll be available in John Lewis for £200 at the end of November. I've stuck a picture of the Matthew Williamson and my (older model) pink Revival after the fold if you'd like to compare and contrast.

Hulger goes wireless

Hulger_wireless_2Yes, I admit it, I was rather taken with the pink Hulger handset that turned up the other day. That's because not only was it a very nice looking object, but it's also found a useful purpose in life thanks to VoIP. Whereas before it was only good for plugging into your mobile and looking like a silly tit, now it's a handy handset that lets you chat over the internet gratis. The two new new handsets come with the middle-class monikers of Pip and Penelope and also support wireless Bluetooth, so you won't be able to twiddle coyly on the cord anymore. The Pip (right) is an 80s style model while the Penelope (left) is a thirties art deco-ish number. Both sell for £50 for the wired versions and £90 for the Bluetooth alternatives.
