Archos AV 700: First portable DVR

Archosrv_700bigpic1_1I'm a big fan of Digital Video Recorders. With the likes of Sky's Sky+ Box and all the myriad DVRs out there, it means I never have to miss a show just because I couldn't be arsed to set the video. So imagine my excitement when I discovered that Archos is now doing a portable DVR that's light enough to be carried from place to place without causing a hernia. It's got a 7-inch screen and a rather large 100GB of hard drive memory, which means there's enough room for 400 hours of TV. After my initial excitement, however, I did stop to wonder exactly who would need a portable DVR. There's no built in TV tuner, but you can record from the TV, a DVD player, satellite or cable source or a VCR, which means you'll need to have the recorder connected to one of these if you want to record shows. But the supplied TV Docking Pod at least means you won't constantly have to fiddle about plugging and unplugging cables when you want to connect it up.

I suppose it does mean that you can watch last night's telly on the way into work, but for £600 (£450 for the 4oGB model), it's a pretty pricey prospect. You can also use it to store and view photos, and also listen to MP3, WAV, WMA music files (DRM and Windows Media Player 10 supported). Plus, you can of course, use it as a regular plug in USB hard drive, storing files or programs or whatever. Should be out any day now.
