And so we come to Shiny Shiny's main award for the evening: the Icon of the Year Award. The idea behind this one was not to just give a prize to the best gadget of the year (Tech Digest did that for us), but to look for a product that has pushed things forward in terms of design and usability: a gadget that's offered something that little bit different to the crowd and set new standards. An obvious contender was the Pedometer. This really has been the gadget phenomenon of the year - with TV shows, magazine articles and governement guidelines all dedicated to telling us just how fat and lazy we are. But in the end, it was the Motorola V3 Razr that won the day. The super super slim mobile has broken new boundaries in design and has done it with style. Meanwhile the all-conquering iPod mini was our runner up. It's almost single-handedly responsible for making gadgets cool and it truly is an icon.
